The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Saturday summoned Arupjyoti Saikia, a faculty member of the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati.

An IIT spokesperson confirmed his summoning as a witness in an unspecified case. It is believed that the case is connected with protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).

Professor Saikia, who teaches history in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, was questioned for about four hours at the NIA's office at Sonapur on the outskirts of Guwahati.

Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said in December last that the government had electronic evidence that a leading academician played a major role in the fiery anti-CAA protests that led to the death of six people, four of them in police firing.

Professor Saikia has research interest in the economic, environmental and political history of modern Assam. Among his books is The Unquiet River: A Biography of the Brahmaputra.
