NIA court extends remand of pro-ISIS suspects arrested from Jabalpur

BHOPAL: A special court in Jabalpur district of Madhya Pradesh has remanded three alleged pro-ISIS individuals to the custody of National Investigation Agency (NIA) until July 8. Agency had requested for extension of their remand for further probe on their ‘terror’ plans.

The suspects, Syed Mamoor Ali, Mohd Adil Khan, and Mohd Shahid, were produced before Judge Raghuveer Patel of the NIA special court on Saturday.

The court had previously granted remand until June 10 during their second appearance, following a seven-day remand granted by the court during their initial appearance.

They were arrested along with three others from Jabalpur by the Delhi unit of NIA on May 26 and 27. Officials say that they had dangerous plots in their minds and were very keen to join ISIS. The authorities conducted raids at 13 locations in Jabalpur, seizing sharp weapons, ammunition, incriminating documents, and digital devices.

NIA claims they had been keeping tabs on Mohammad Adil Khan since August 2022. The case was officially registered by the NIA on May 24 after receiving information about pro-ISIS activities.

Adil and his associates are alleged to have engaged in ISIS propaganda through social media platforms and grassroots programs. The module would hold meetings in local mosques and private residences, conspiring to carry out acts of terror in the country, it is alleged. Khan operated several YouTube channels, Instagram accounts, and WhatsApp groups to further their extremist agenda.

The investigation has revealed that all three accused individuals held extremist views and had plans to carry out violence and terror strikes. They were allegedly involved in activities such as fundraising, disseminating ISIS propaganda materials, luring and recruiting youths, and procuring arms and ammunition for terrorist activities.

One of the suspects identified as Syed Mamoor Ali had established a closed group and operated a corresponding WhatsApp group. He was also said to be in contact with an illegal arms supplier, attempting to purchase a pistol with the help of his associates.

Further investigation unveiled that the suspect, Shahid, had been actively seeking to acquire weapons. He had devised a plan to procure pistols, as well as improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and grenades. Investigations are underway.
