NI vaccine booking probe after issue with system eligibility checker

People who are not eligible to receive their Covid-19 jab were able to book an appointment due to an issue with the system's eligibility checker, it has emerged.

On Tuesday people from Northern Ireland were told they could book their vaccine at the SSE Arena ahead of its opening on March 29.

But an issue with the system's eligibility checker meant some people who are not yet eligible were able to book an appointment.

The Department of Health said those appointments are being cancelled and they are "looking into the circumstances that allowed this".

The SSE Arena will be a regional vaccination centre working alongside Trust centres and GP practices. Community Pharmacists will also join the vaccination programme next week, bringing vaccinations to many local high streets.

A spokesperson for the Department of Health said: "Yesterday, some members of the public in Northern Ireland who are not yet eligible to receive a Covid vaccine, were able to make an appointment.

"This was as a result of an issue with the systems eligibility checker, and we are looking into the circumstances that allowed this – but we want to clarify that such appointments are being cancelled.

"Ineligible appointments will in any event be turned away at the vaccination centre through checks that apply there. Our thanks go to the vast majority of people who are using our services properly."
