NI travel rules: Stormont Executive to discuss relaxing restrictions

Travel restrictions in Northern Ireland could ease, following discussions amongst the Stormont Executive.

Health Minister Robin Swann is expected to ask ministers to make changes in line with those already made in the rest of the UK.

The meeting is set to take place on Thursday (July 29).

From 4am on Monday (August 2), fully vaccinated passengers from the EU or the US will not need to isolate when coming to Great Britain from an amber list country.

This rule already applies to those who have had both jabs under the UK vaccine programme, except for arrivals from France.

The new exception will apply to people who have had both jabs of a vaccine approved by the EU or US.

All travellers will still need to take either a lateral flow or PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test prior to their departure, as well as a PCR test on the second day after they arrive.

Under-18s will be exempt from isolation and, depending on their age, some will not have to test.

Following discussions, Northern Ireland could soon follow suit.

The Health Minister is also expected to suggest that international cruises could resume.

Social distancing, face masks in schools, the exhibitions and conferences ban, and self-isolation exemptions for Villarreal fans travelling to Belfast for the UEFA Super Cup final are also thought to be on the agenda.
