NI teachers launch fundraiser to create sensory room for children with additional needs

A group of teachers have started a fundraising campaign to create a sensory room for children with additional needs at their school.

Heather Armstrong and her team at the Moderate Learning Difficulties Unit at Dundonald High School have started a campaign to raise £3,000 in order to create the sensory room, which they believe will be of huge benefit to the children at the school.

The room would create a safe space for students to use if they are feeling overwhelmed at school or need some time to themselves.

The creation of the room would be part of a redevelopment, that will see the MLD unit moved to a new part of the school that will be quieter and have less students walking past it.

Ms Armstrong said: "At Dundonald High School we have a range of children who have statements or additional needs that learn with us at our moderate learning unit.

"We have three classes that support children with autism, ADHD and other social and emotional behavioural issues.

"We are currently in the process of moving the unit from the top floor of the school to one on the ground floor, that will be more suited to the student's needs and be separated away from other students.

"This is where we would like to create the sensory room, which will be hugely beneficial to our students and give them a safe space to go if they are in need."

Ms Armstrong has set a target of £3,000 for the fundraiser and has said that if they are able to raise more than that, then the money will be used to create a sensory garden for the students and purchase them new equipment to help their learning.

She said: "Everything that we raise will be invested into resources for the children.

"If we manage  to raise more than our target, we will create a special sensory garden outside for the students to use if they ever want to have a few minutes peace and quiet.

"Anything after that will be used to get Ipads and other equipment that will further help the students at school.

"We are very grateful to anyone who is able to donate and help us create this facility for our students."
