NI Sports Forum reiterates concerns over sporting lockdown

The NI Sports Forum has reiterated its concerns over the impact of ongoing lockdown restrictions here.

The NI Executive confirmed yesterday that current Covid-19 regulations will remain in place until at least April 1.

Under the current rules all indoor and outdoor sport is not permitted, other than at elite level.

There have been calls to reopen some sporting activities here, including golf and outdoor grassroots sports.

In a statement issued on Friday, the NI Sports Forum said it recognised the challenges facing the health service due to the coronavirus pandemic.

But it added that many sporting groups were "struggling to come to terms with the rationale for decisions being made".

The statement read: "The NI Sports Forum recognises the continuing challenges facing the health service due to the COVID-19 pandemic and understand that the NI Executive have had to make difficult decisions to overcome this virus with the extension of restrictions to 1 April.

"We must recognise the disappointment of a number of members, clubs and the wider sporting public who are struggling to come to terms with the rationale for decisions being made not to allow some sporting activity to resume whilst allowing up to 10 people from two households to meet outside together as an example."

The Forum has now requested a meeting with Health Minister Robin Swann.

"Today we have written to the Health Minister Robin Swann to request a meeting with him and relevant officials to understand this current stance and to discuss future decisions relating to the safe return of sports participation," the statement added.
