NI prisoner report reveals more than 1,500 behind bars

Just over 1,500 people are behind bars in Northern Ireland on any given day, it's been revealed.

A Stormont report on the prison population released yesterday showed violent crime had landed more than a third in jail.

The number of men was up slightly on last year, to 1,442 - and the number of women rose from 65 the year before, to 74.

More than a third were in prison for violence, followed by public order offences (15.2%) and sex crimes (11%).

Close to a third of female inmates were there for theft, followed by violence.

Most prisoners taken into immediate custody were sentenced to between one and five years - with 16% behind bars for life.

NI draws with Switzerland as having 80 inmates for every 100,000 of its population, just above the Republic of Ireland, with a rate of 74.

It's well below elsewhere in the UK, where it's 135 per 100,000 in Scotland, and 134 in England and Wales.

On average 157 NI male prisoners over the age of 21 had been sentenced to life - and one inmate younger under 21.

The majority of women were sentenced to less than a year.
