NI news: Two-year-old girl suffers large burn after firework thrown into garden

A two-year-old girl was injured after a firework was thrown into her family garden struck her in the face.

She suffered a large burn after the firework was thrown while she was on her back doorstep with her parents.

The firework then exploded and set the curtains on the patio doors of the house in Rockfield Heights in Newry on fire.

Police are attempting to find those responsible.

A spokesman said: "Police are appealing for witnesses after a two year old child was injured by a firework thrown into the garden of her home in Rockfield Heights, Newry yesterday evening, Saturday 31 October.

"The little girl was standing on the back doorstep with her parents at around 8.15pm when the firework was thrown over the fence and struck her on her face causing a large burn. The firework then exploded and set alight the curtains on the patio doors, which were open. The child’s coat was also burned.

"Police are asking for help in identifying those responsible. Please call police in Ardmore on 101, quoting reference 2463 31/10/20."

Meanwhile, the fire service 22% increase on emergency calls and responses in 2020 on Halloween night.

In two incidents, the fire service encountered “hostile” members of the public who threw missiles including fireworks.

Between 6am on October 31 and 1am on November 1, there were 83 emergency calls and crews responded to 62 operational incidents.

They said that 18 were bonfire or ‘Halloween related’.
