NI news: Man arrested following woman's sudden death

A 50-year-old has been arrested following the sudden death of a woman in Co Armagh.

Police say the woman passed away at Carrickdale Gardens in Portadown in the early hours of Tuesday and that an investigation has since been launched.

A postmortem is due to take place to determine her cause of death.

A PSNI spokesperson said : "Detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the sudden death of a woman in Portadown reported during the early hours of yesterday morning (Tuesday, February 9th).

"A postmortem examination will take place in due course to determine the cause of death. A 50-year-old man has been arrested as part of the investigation and has been taken to Musgrave Custody Suite. There are no further details at this time."

Police revealed around 5pm that they have been given additional time to question the man.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Gibson has appealed for anyone with information to contact police on 101 quoting reference 53 of 09/01/21.

He said: "We believe that the deceased was in the area of Carrickdale Gardens in the company of a male at around 5pm on Monday 8 February. We would like to hear from anyone who was in the area from this time until the early hours of Tuesday morning or who has any other information."

SDLP Upper Bann MLA Dolores Kelly has expressed her condolences following the woman's sudden death.

The Policing Board member has urged anyone with information to come forward to police.

Dolores Kelly MLA said: "My thoughts and prayers are with the family of the woman who has tragically lost her life in the Tandragee Road area of Portadown. Police have arrested a man and I understand that they have established a line of inquiry.

"I want to put on record my thanks to the officers who are working with the family in these tragic circumstances."

Portadown Councillor Eamon McNeill added: "This is a tragic situation and my thoughts are with the family of the woman who has lost her life.

"I would appeal to anyone with any information to come forward to police to help with the investigation as soon as possible."
