NI nail technician explains how to take off acrylic nails and gel polish at home

With beauty salons across Northern Ireland being closed for four weeks, many ladies who love getting their nails done may be panicking.

It may not be a good idea to keep your acrylic nails or gel polish on for over four weeks.

But it's also so important to make sure you remove them safely.

It should be noted that you should never pull off your acrylic nails or pick off your gel polish, as this may damage your natural nail and cause a lot of pain.

Co Down nail technician Tia Murray, owner of @tia_murray_nails, has shared her top tips with Be to make sure you can get your nails off safely at home.

Acrylic Nail Removal Tips

1. Push back cuticles. If you have longer acrylics, cut them down slightly.

2. Use a file to buff off the top coat and as much acrylic as possible while avoiding the skin around your nail.

3. Soak off anything that is remaining in acetone. The best way to do this is to soak cotton pads in acetone, and then wrap them around each of your nails with tin foil. You can also try by simply soaking your nails in a bowl of acetone.

4. Then wait, it may take around 30 to 45 minutes for the acetone to break down the acrylic. Check during to see how it is working and if you need to wait longer.

5. Now you can gently scrape or buff away any remaining acrylic. The acrylic will have went soft so this should be relatively easy to do, a metal cuticle pusher or buffer can both used for this.

The professional nail technician added: "After all these steps are complete, file the natural nail, buff the natural nail and finish with cuticle oil, if this is done step by step and safely, there will be no damage done to natural nail."

For gel nails, follow the same steps but you will not need to wait as long as you would for acrylics.
