NI Football League to address 'increase of unacceptable behaviour' at matches

The NI Football League is looking into ways of developing an education and awareness campaign to promote player welfare.

It follows what NIFL have described as an "increase of unacceptable behaviour" at matches.

The league's Premiership Management Committee met with representatives from all 12 Premiership clubs on Wednesday.

At that meeting "several incidents" of inappropriate spectator behaviour were raised.

"The NI Football League takes pride in the welcoming and all-inclusive atmosphere enjoyed by the majority of supporters across all clubs; however the Committee, with representatives from all twelve clubs present, noted several incidents of participants (players, coaches, referees etc) being allegedly subjected to inappropriate spectator behaviour this season," NIFL said in a statement.

"As a result, the clubs are keen to develop an education and awareness campaign to promote player welfare, with a strong focus on mental health and wellbeing whilst also creating a safe and respectful environment for everyone to enjoy football in our league.

"The NI Football League will now develop a plan to support its member clubs in a collaborative framework that encourages football-focused spectator conduct with appropriate tools, knowledge and support to address improper spectator conduct."
