NI Football League provides update on opening round of Covid testing

The Danske Bank Premiership will return on Saturday with a full schedule of games.

All six fixtures have been cleared to play after the first round of Covid testing was rolled out to clubs yesterday.

The top flight has been suspended for the past two weeks following an increase in Covid cases here.

The circuit-breaker was introduced after a number of players, managers and referees voiced concerns over football continuing under the threat of the virus.

The NI Football League and Irish FA introduced Covid-19 testing as part of an initial four-week roll-out costing £15,000.

In a statement, the league said: "The NI Football League is pleased to advise that all six Danske Bank Premiership fixtures will go ahead as scheduled tomorrow (Saturday 23 January).

"We would like to thank clubs for their continued cooperation in supporting and implementing Covid-19 protocols to ensure a safe return to football for all players, coaches and officials."
