NI Football League defers deadline as Premiership impasse continues

The NI Football League has deferred today's proposed deadline for final club responses on how to the end the season until later this month.

It follows another lengthy meeting of the league's Board on Friday.

NIFL says it expects more guidance to come out of next Wednesday's Uefa ExCo meeting which will update member associations on how European club competitions will work next season.

They say this will enable them to make decisions "based on fact rather than speculation".

Clubs shot down the two-option approach to ending the season on Thursday night with a majority of Irish League clubs eager to conclude the season in its entirety.

NIFL presented the options earlier this week - to play two more rounds of fixtures next month or decide the table by a mathematical model.

The majority of clubs are eager to play the remaining seven fixtures later in the year and discuss the redistribution of European prize money amongst the 12 top flight clubs.

One option of satisfying UEFA’s desire for European nominees would be to rewind the table to 22 games when clubs had played each other home and away.

Clubs were due to table their responses to the two options by 3pm on Friday, after Thursday's initial deadline was delayed.

NIFL recently set a June 30 deadline to decide whether the season, which went into lockdown on March 13, can be completed or has to be wrapped up because of the coronavirus crisis.

"The NI Football League are aware that the UEFA ExCo are meeting on Wednesday 17 June and would anticipate that meeting will fully inform the process and dates of all UEFA club competitions following this meeting," NIFL said in a statement.

"This will enable the NIFL Board to make decisions based on fact rather than speculation.

"The NIFL Board have written to the IFA to enable them to send an update to UEFA ahead of this meeting.

"The representatives of the Premiership clubs met yesterday (Thursday) and have advised they wish to continue to consult collectively on a way forward.

"The NIFL Board are agreeable to giving clubs further space to formulate their plans ahead of a Premiership Management Committee once information from UEFA is available.

"This time will allow for further dialogue with the Irish FA and NI Executive on a return to football and consequently we have agreed to defer today's proposed deadline for final Premiership club response until a later date.

"In addition, submissions have now been received from all Championship and Premier Intermediate League clubs and will now be considered by the NIFL Board."
