NI family mounts Everest challenge...in their backyard

A family of health workers has mounted a campaign to get people to climb Everest from home.

The Harts have already begun the 30,000 foot incline, doing a thousand steps a day in their backyard.

The Belfast trio will reach the "peak" by April 30.

By then Patrick Hart, whose med school graduation has been brought forward, will be on the wards.

He said: "With everyone being so segregated, it’s nice to do something that connects you, keeps people active and it’s a goal for people to try and tick off and you can say 'I climbed Mt Everest'."

His dad Nigel is a GP in West Belfast and his Sophia sister, a third year med student, is hoping to work as a student technician.

Patrick said: "We’ll all be hopefully getting engaged in some way, the same as I’m sure a lot of people across NI and the rest of the world are trying to lend their hand in some way."

Dr Nigel Hart climbed the real Everest 12 years ago on a research expedition.

He hopes the Everest in a Month challenge will help the community keep healthy.

He added: "It’s time like these where you have to dig deep and we are individually and collectively discovering that resourcefulness that will help us to support one another and to find a way to get through what’s ahead.

"And we will get through, of that I’m sure - but until we’re at that point we need to find ways of rediscovering what connects us a community."

You can follow the Harts' journey and join in yourself with the hashtag #everestinamonth on Instagram and Twitter.
