NI covid passports: Vaccine certification app ready to download for travel and domestic use

Mandatory vaccine passports are set to be introduced in Northern Ireland after Stormont ministers voted by a majority to support the move.

While details remain unclear, with a further paper to be brought forward tonight or tomorrow morning, a vaccine certification app is currently in place.

The app was launched at the start of the month by the Department of Health.

The new version of the COVIDCert NI app now offers separate vaccination certificates for both foreign travel and domestic use. These QR codes provide official confirmation that you have had both your Covid-19 vaccine doses.

A dedicated helpline has been set up, and have staff ready to help should users have any problems getting through the process.

The Cert Check NI app is free to download and can be used on a smartphone or tablet device.

Where can I download?

The app is available for those who received their vaccination in Northern Ireland to download from Google Play or Apple app stores.

The first process will involve proof of identity. If your application is not processed automatically the NI COVID Certification Service will email you directly when your application has been successfully processed, telling you when you can download your certificate online or via the app.

How does the app work?

  • To view your COVID certificates you will first need to apply for a certificate using nidirect. If you have not already done this the app will direct you to apply.
  • If you have applied for your COVID certificate, the app will ask you to log-in to your nidirect account. You may be asked for additional proof of identity.
  • The app will then automatically retrieve your certificate from HSC NI once logged in.
  • When your COVID certificate is valid, it will be green and you will be able to view your certificate as a QR code.
  • Your data is secure – the app does not share information about your vaccination.
  • When you travel, the QR code will be scanned to ensure that your COVID certificate is valid.
  • The certificate page has a holographic HSC logo which adds an extra layer of security.
  • The app will not register any additional information about you, and is based solely on data that is already registered by nidirect and HSC NI.

Mr Swann wants to see enforceable Covid certification in operation across a range of hospitality settings from December 13.

It is reported that Minister Swann has proposed that passports are used to gain entry to nightclubs, hospitality premises that serve food and/or drink, cinemas, theatres and conferences halls.
