NI coronavirus: Stormont Executive silent on month-long absence of Covid-19 press conferences

The Stormont Executive has remained silent on a month-long absence of Covid-19 press conferences.

There has not been a live broadcast briefing on the power-sharing government's coronavirus response since April 14.

The public media conferences, which are usually aired live on the Executive's online platforms, have been used throughout the pandemic to provide updates on the health emergency.

Both the Executive Office and the Department of Health were asked whether there was a reason for the lack of recent public briefings.

They were asked whether Arlene Foster last month announcing her resignation as DUP leader following an internal party revolt had played a part in not holding press conferences.

Their absence could also be a reflection of the reduced numbers of Covid-19 cases and recent relaxations of restrictions.

Both departments did not respond to requests for a comment.

The Executive held six Covid-19 press conferences in March and one last month, according to the number of videos uploaded to its Facebook page.

Before the most recent briefing on April 14, there had been a press conference just under three weeks earlier on March 25.

The number of people in Northern Ireland who have received a first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine has topped more than one million, according to the latest government figures.

Two further Covid-related deaths and 104 positive cases were reported on Tuesday.

Pending a review on Thursday, restrictions are set to be further relaxed on May 24 including a reopening of indoor hospitality.
