NI Coronavirus: Eight further deaths and 791 new cases reported by DoH

The Department of Health has reported a further eight coronavirus related deaths.

The death toll in Northern Ireland now stands at 810, the department says.

Wednesday's dashboard update reports a further 791 positive cases of the virus, bringing the total number of positive cases to 44,693 since the start of the pandemic.

Over the past seven days, the Department says 3,886 individuals have tested positive in Northern Ireland.

There are currently 441 Covid-19 confirmed patients in hospital and 47 in intensive care.

Meanwhile, Deputy First Minister Michelle O'Neill says advice is "stark and clear" that more people will die if Northern Ireland coronavirus restrictions are eased.

She said: "I am clear that the Executive's approach must be guided by public health advice because the priority must be to save lives, support workers, families and businesses, and to ensure that people's livelihoods are protected.

"Last night at the Executive we were warned by the Chief Medical Officer that any easing of the current restrictions would cause ‘excess deaths’.

"My priority has been to save lives, protect livelihoods and ensure that our health service would not be overwhelmed by the spread of the virus."
