NI Coronavirus: 21 further deaths and 787 new cases reported by DoH

The Department of Health has reported a further 21 coronavirus related deaths.

According to the latest update, 12 of the fatalities are said to have occurred within the current reporting period, with 9 deaths occurring outside the current 24-hour period.

The death toll in Northern Ireland now stands at 1,240, according to the DoH.

Wednesday's dashboard update reports a further 787 positive cases of the virus, bringing the total number of positive cases to 63,723 since the start of the pandemic.

Over the past seven days, the Department says 4,106 individuals have tested positive in Northern Ireland.

There are currently 451 Covid-19 confirmed patients in hospital and 31 in intensive care.

Meanwhile, updated travel restrictions have been published by the Northern Ireland Executive.

Rules state you should only travel within the region when it is essential to do so.

Within Northern Ireland, you can travel to meet your Christmas bubble on one day only between December 23 and 27. This is to provide some flexibility for those working on Christmas Day.

For the week beginning December 26, there will be a ‘stay at home curfew’ in place from 8pm to 6am each day, with exceptions only for specifically defined purposes.

Travellers arriving into Northern Ireland from within the CTA must self-isolate upon arrival for 10 days.

Essential travel includes but is not restricted to:

  • returning home, if you are away from your permanent place of residence
  • work, where you cannot work from home
  • accessing health and social care services
  • accessing critical services including education, childcare, or services to victims
  • fulfilling essential caring responsibilities
  • buying essential goods or services within your local area
  • attending the care and exercise of an animal, or veterinary services
  • fulfilling a legal obligation, including attending court or satisfying bail conditions, or participating in legal proceedings
  • to provide emergency response services
