NI Coronavirus: 13 further Covid-19 related deaths recorded as cases soar to more than 1,900 in last 24 hours

The Department of Health has reported a further 13 coronavirus related deaths.

According to the latest update, 9 of the fatalities are said to have occurred within the current reporting period, with 4 deaths occurring outside the current 24-hour period.

The death toll in Northern Ireland now stands at 1,397, according to the DoH.

Wednesday's dashboard update reports a further 1,985 positive cases of the virus, bringing the total number of positive cases to 83,236 since the start of the pandemic.

Over the past seven days, the Department says 12,144 individuals have tested positive in Northern Ireland.

There are currently 592 Covid-19 confirmed patients in hospital and 44 in intensive care.

Meanwhile, all GCSE, AS and A-level exams are to be cancelled in Northern Ireland, the Education Minister has confirmed.

Principal of Bangor Academy and Sixth Form College Matthew Pitts also issued an "urgent exams update" to parents this morning.

Due to the current situation, he said he had made the "decision to cancel all of the exams scheduled for this week and next".

He added: "This includes BTEC and GCSE. I accept this wont be a popular decision as students have worked really hard to prepare for these exams in very challenging circumstances but my main job is to keep your children safe, and I cannot, with any integrity, ask you to send your children to school when all the latest advice is to remain at home for the safety of all of us and to protect the NHS."
