NI activists call for green Covid-19 recovery

Activists have demanded Stormont take a green lead to their Covid-19 recovery.

Youth Climate Association Northern Ireland gathered yesterday in masks, gloves and two metres apart to urge ministers to plan for a more sustainable future.

The half-dozen members brought life-sized cut-outs to stand in for the crowds at pre- Covid  protests.

High schooler Anna Kernahan, whose weekly Friday strikes have gone online since lockdown began, said the pandemic had given society a chance to change direction.

The group want more investment in renewables and sustainable infrastructure.

The 17-year-old, from Belfast, said: "We are here to demand a green recovery from our government because right now they're negotiating how they're going to rebuild our society and we want to make sure that a green recovery is at the very forefront of that because currently our systems are very short-term, they are not sustainable at all.

"Do we want to fast-forward into the climate crisis and make suffering on this scale the new normal, or do we want to rewind and take this chance to rebuild a more sustainable society and livable planet?"

Activist Adam Martin, 17, said he was glad to be able to protest in person.

He added: "For me it's very special because obviously we had to step back for a few months so to be able to come back out onto the streets and demand change means quite a lot.

"Coming out of a crisis like this our economy will need investment so it provides an opportunity to steer it in a green way."
