NHS worker 'tearful' after stranger's act of kindness on freezing morning

An NHS worker from Weston-super-Mare has taken to Twitter to say how a local man’s act of kindness has made her ‘tearful’ at a time when ‘love for the NHS and its staff seems to be diminished’.

Alice May is a pharmacy technician, and like many NHS staff has been working extremely long hours during the COVID pandemic.

As she was getting into her car to leave for work this morning, a nearby gentleman noticed her NHS lanyard.

“A gentleman was saying goodbye to who I assume was his wife and he saw me and asked me what I did,” Alice said.

“He thanked me and said it was early to be going off to work, I explained how busy it had been over Christmas with medications and COVID signposting.”

After thanking Alice for her hard work, the man took his gratitude a step further.

“He then told me to get into my car and turn the heaters on and he would scrape all my windows.

“I tried to tell him he should get into the warm and he wouldn’t take no for an answer, so I sat in the warm car whilst this kind gentleman went around my whole car and cleared my windows.”

Alice explained how the gentleman’s heartwarming act made her feel ‘appreciated.’

“I sat there and felt quite tearful at his kindness, especially at a time where the love for the NHS and its staff seems to have diminished," she said.

“That small act of kindness has made me feel so good. I’ve had a smile on my face all day since.”

Alice took to Twitter to share a video of the man scraping ice from her car this morning.

Her tweet read: “At 7.20am I walked to my very frozen car. A kind gentleman noticed my NHS lanyard and asked me about my job.

“He thanked me for my service and told me to get into my car. He then proceeded to scrape all the ice off my windows whilst I sat inside feeling both warm and appreciated.”

The tweet has since accumulated nearly 200 likes.

One person commented: “He did the right thing & we all thank you for your incredible work on our behalf” while another said: “What an amazing chap .. when he’s done can he come and do mine .. Keep up the good work Alice , may 2021 be a better one.”
