NHS worker 'distraught' as father's ashes stolen from garden memorial

A memorial garden at a home in Wilford has been ruined after small statues were stolen.

One of the two Buddhas taken from the property in Maplestead Avenue contained the ashes of the home owner's father.

The mum-of-three, who did not wish to be named, has been left distraught by the theft and is desperate to have her items returned.

The NHS worker's father was just 61 when he died four years ago from cancer.

“My father brought them for me over 15 years ago. They aren't worth anything but after he passed away in 2016 I had some ashes placed in one of them and had it as a garden memorial piece," said the 48 year old.

“It's obviously got hugely sentimental value to me and my family.

“I'm absolutely gutted they've now gone. If anyone sees them being sold or recognises them, please help me get them back. The statues are both bronze, one lying down and one sitting.

“Hopefully we can track them down and I can have them returned.”

Officers are now appealing for any witness or information following the incident on Tuesday, June 23 at around 3.15am.

Police Constable Chris Lee is leading the investigation. He said: "We were saddened to hear of the theft and we hope to catch the culprit.

"We've spoken to local residents and made local CCTV inquiries and we are keen to speak to this man pictured in connection with the incident. We understand it's not the clearest image, but you never know it might jog someone's memory who saw something suspicious that night.

"If anyone recognises him please do get in touch as he might be able to help with our enquiries."
