NHS warns that hand sanisiter left in your car could cause a car fire during the heatwave

Edinburgh is set to bask in a heatwave as temperatures could soar to highs of 30 degrees in some areas.

But with the pandemic still looming, many people will quite rightly have a bottle of hand sanitiser stored in their car for killing potential coronavirus on days out.

The NHS is warning that leaving hand sanitiser in the car during the heatwave could be the "cause of fires."

NHS property services sent out a warning intended for NHS colleagues urging them to remove hand sanitiser from their cars over fire fears.

The warning read: "This quick share is to alert all colleagues to the potential fire risk in vehicles, caused by alcohol-based hand sanitiser.

"We have received a number of reports of hand sanitiser being the cause of fires when left in vehicles in the hot weather the UK is currently experiencing.

"The alcohol based sanitiser is becoming heated resulting in flammable vapours being released.

"These vapours are reaching their 'flashpoint' and then ignite in normal air conditions, setting fire to flammable components within the car."
