NHS to start 24-hour Covid vaccine trial over next 10 days

The NHS will start a 24-hour coronavirus vaccine trial over the next 10 days

Health bosses have confirmed hospitals will push vaccines out around the clock to stop the spread of Covid-19.

Staff could administer up to 140 jabs per minute in the new trial

Sir Simon Stevens, NHS England boss, unveiled the plan today on the BBC's Andrew Marr Show.

Up to 140 jabs will be administered per minute in the new trial (PA)

It comes as projected vaccination figures for this week are up from around a million the week before.

New figures have revealed there have been no new deaths from Covid-19 in Scotland in the last 24 hours.

The Scottish Government confirmed the numbers today as coronavirus cases reached 1,341.

The total number of positive cases in Scotland now stands at 162,333 since the start of the pandemic in Scotland.

Now when asked if Sir Simon Stevens would like to see jabs given 'all day, all night' he said: "Absolutely, we will do that at the point that we have enough supply that it makes sense."

"We will start testing 24/7 in some hospitals over the course of the next 10 days.

"But we are at the moment vaccinating at the rate of about 140 jabs a minute."

"I'm pretty confident by the time we get to the end of today, Sunday night, we will have done a million and half vaccinations this past week."

He added: "Hospitals are under extreme pressure and staff are under extreme pressure.“Since Christmas Day we’ve seen another 15,000 increase in the inpatients in hospitals across England.
"That’s the equivalent of filling 30 hospitals full of coronavirus patients."

It comes as tougher lockdown restrictions are began yesterday for Scotland as the country desperately tries to stop the spread of Covid-19.

The First Minister Nicola Sturgeon warned the situation is "extremely serious" and action must be taken to halt the rapidly spreading new strain.

Now people who live in a Level 4 area, which is currently all of mainland Scotland, are banned from leaving home except for essential purposes.
