NHS staff celebrate man's recovery by placing wedding ring back on to cheers of joy

Hero NHS staff celebrated a man's recovery from coronavirus by replacing his wedding ring to cheers of joy as he left intensive care.

Touching footage of the moment shows the man being wheeled from ICU at Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales.

A team of medics in gowns, face masks, gloves and caps walk alongside him as they clap and cheer.

As they pause momentarily after exiting the double doors, a nurse then takes a ring from a small pot and places it on his wedding finger.

Again, the group of hero medics erupt into joyful applause as the masked patient gives a thumbs-up.

Prince Charles Hospital (PCH) uploaded the clip to their Facebook page, saying: "Our multidisciplinary team at PCH are clapping their first patient out of ICU and returning to the ward. Great work, well done all."

In Wales, there are currently 1,335 people with confirmed or suspected cases of coronavirus in hospital.

Dr Andrew Goodall, chief executive of NHS Wales, today said one in three critical care beds are being used by those with coronavirus.

Dr Goodall also added that 9.2% of NHS Wales staff are off sick, compared to the usual 5% for this time of year.

Five percent of staff are self-isolating, he said.

He said it was “inevitable”, adding that working in NHS means there will be a high level of risk.

We have to accept Covid-19 is “indiscriminate” about who it affects, Dr Goodall said.

But he added that we have to make sure we have guidance in place and supplies to support people.

“We will see staff who have Covid-19 symptoms,” he said.

He said “very stringent” infection control measures were in place to stop patients in hospital from contracting Covid-19.

Scenes of clapping seen at the Welsh hospital have been mirrored across the country as frontline workers celebrate patients winning their fight against the virus.

An 84-year-old grandad received applause as he left hospital after making a recovery (@EmpressSapph/Twitter)

Earlier this month, NHS staff lined a corridor and clapped as an 84-year-old grandad was wheeled from hospital after recovering.

His granddaughter filmed the heartwarming moment that her grandad prepared to leave hospital after he had been given the all clear, and uploaded it online.

The unnamed man, who was sitting in a wheelchair had a mask over his mouth and nose, and was seen smiling and waving at the nurses who applauded him.

The video has since been viewed on Twitter nearly two million times, and received over 200,000 likes and 30,000 comments.

On her  Instagram, she explained that both of her grandparents had fallen ill after their trip to Jamaica.

The family believed it was after-flight flu, but when her grandad's condition worsened, he got tested for coronavirus  - and the results came back positive.

"He had tested positive for COVID-19 then ended up having Pneumonia.

"The doctors said he was ‘deteriorating’ and the next 24hrs are ‘critical’ but God!

"My Granddad is 84 years old and has beaten COVID-19.

"Thank you NHS Staff".
