NHS Spitfire to fly over Bristol today - when to see it

The "Thank U NHS" Spitfire will fly over hospitals in Bristol today (August 18), in tribute to NHS and key workers for their hard work during the Covid-19 pandemic.

It will be flying over Southmead Hospital at 2.25pm followed by the Bristol Royal Infirmary several minutes later, before making its way to Yeovil and Taunton.

Follow live updates as the Spitfire flies over the West Country here.

The Aircraft Restoration Company is flying the plane, which took off from Duxford Airfield in Cambridgeshire at 10am.

Those lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the blue Spitfire will be able to see the message "Thank U NHS" written across the underside of its wings.

In the coming weeks, the aircraft, which is making a number of flypasts, is being covered with the names of 80,000 NHS heroes, family members, neighbours and friends nominated by members of the public.

People are being offered the chance to nominate the name of a loved one to be handwritten onto the plane in aid of NHS Charities together for as little as £10, with room for 80,000 names on it.

The aim of the flypasts is to lift the spirits of those across the UK, many of who are still living in some form of isolation, while also thanking the hospitals, communities and individuals who have been at the forefront of helping to get the country through the pandemic.

This Spitfire was specifically built and used for photo reconnaissance during conflict, carrying cameras instead of weapons.

It was also flown and air-raced by the famous female ATA pilot Lettice Curtis.
