NHS nurse given months to live after 'pregnancy pains' turned out to be cancer

A mum was given 18 months to live after what she thought were pregnancy pains turned out to be stage four cancer.

Jill Steedman, 32, initially thought her pains were caused by a sore shoulder.

But, the NHS nurse from Dundee, found two lumps on her breast last May, shortly after giving birth to her son Reuben, now one.

In September she was diagnosed with stage four metastatic neuroendocrine carcinoma of unknown primary, a very rare  cancer.

The disease was found in her breasts, lung, lymph nodes and liver.

After failed rounds of chemotherapy Jill's loved ones are now desperately trying to raise a quarter of million pounds for potentially life saving treatment unavailable on the NHS, Daily Record reports.

Holding the fort at home is Jill's husband, joiner, Robert, 32, who is looking after little Reuben and four-year-old big sister, Emily.

With coronavirus claiming the lives of society's most vulnerable, like Jill, it's a race against the clock to save her life.

Jill's brother is law, Alex Steedman said: "It's like we are living a nightmare.

"Immunotherapy treatment available in Germany could help us, but we need at least £75,000 to pay for treatment and travel costs.

"Jill is suffering more pain every day.

"The whole family are trapped indoors to avoid catching coronavirus.

"We're just doing out best to raise as much money as possible."

Jill became a nurse several years ago, working mostly at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee and often treating cancer patients.

In a cruel twist of fate Jill is now on the receiving end of treatment at Ninewells.

She was put on a six-cycle intensive chemotherapy called Carboplatin and Etoposide, which didn't work.

Her tumours had increased in size and had spread further into her liver

Medics said the only chemotherapy treatment left would only offer palliative care.

Alex, an offshore scaffolder, set up a Go Fund Me page to help his brother's young family.

On the site so far, more than £25,000 has been raised.

"The amount of money donated on the page and support from the local community has been brilliant," Alex added.

"Marnie from MTV's Georgie Shore has donated as well as Dundee, Dundee United and Rangers football clubs.

"Members of the local community have helped too.

"It's been overwhelming but we have a way to go."

One huge stumbling block in their fundraising efforts is the coronavirus outbreak, something that can prove deadly for people like Jill.

Alex said: "With the country on lockdown, a number of planned charity events are unable to go ahead.

"It's too dangerous for Emily and Reuben to leave the house, in case they bring the virus back in so all four of them are trapped in the house.

"It just adds more panic, it's a total nightmare."

In Scotland 584 people have tested positive for coronavirus and 16 people have died.

On Monday night Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that the UK would go into lockdown.

It comes after thousands of people chose to ignore advice to practice social distancing over the weekend.

Alex said that for the sake of people like his sister-in-law the new rules must be adhered too.

"Coronavirus is not a joke, especially for sick people," he said.

"It feel like a celebrity will have to die before people take it seriously.

"We need to stay home and stop the spread."
