NHS nurse discovers grandad has died of coronavirus during brutal night shift

A NHS nurse on the coronavirus frontline learned that his grandad had died of the killer bug while working a brutal night shift in an intensive care unit.

Adam Whitehurst posted a selfie just minutes before finding out his grandad had died, showing his face covered in red sores from the protective mask.

He had taken it midway through his night shift, where he was looking after patients battling the life-threatening virus.

Just minutes later, he was told his grandad had died, the Daily Star reports.

Since then, Adam has taken to Twitter to beg people to "stay the f*** inside".

In a post, he wrote: "I took this picture, in the middle of my night shift as a make-shift ICU nurse, covered in sweat, sores on my face from my mask.

Some people have been caught flouting the lockdown rules (PA)

"Minutes later I was told my grandad had died of coronavirus. Just stay the f*** inside, please #staysafe #ProtectTheNHS."

According to reports, Adam is an Operating Department Practitioner at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.

The UK is currently under strict lockdown measures, with many abiding by the social distancing rules enforced.

However, some people have been caught flouting the rules, with cases being reported across the country over the last few weeks.

Yesterday,  Prime Minister Boris Johnson was taken into hospital after suffering from Covid-19 symptoms for more than ten days.

He has since been transferred to the Intensive Care Unit after his conditioned "worsened."

He was understood to be conscious when he was moved to intensive care at about 7pm, as a precaution should he require ventilation to aid his recovery.
