NHS nurse and boyfriend die together after car crashes into tree near his home

An NHS nurse and her "true gentleman" partner died after their car crashed into a tree and burst into flames.

The accident happened in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Jack Nunn, 24, and Hannah Elsworth, 22, had dropped off friends only minutes before the accident, reports say.

The car, reported to be a white Audi, hit the tree - roughly 300 metres from where Jack Nunn lived.

The collision was attended by paramedics but the couple were pronounced dead at the scene, reports YorkshireLive.

Tributes have flooded in for the couple on social media after tragic news of their death broke.

A relative described Jack as a "true gentleman, a hard working man and a true credit to this family".

She added: You were a lovely couple, grew together and now you can both rest in peace together.  I will miss you terribly Jack. Until we meet again".

A relative said that Hannah was an NHS nurse at Barnsley Hospital.

Locals woken by the loud crash and fire rushed out of their homes and tried to douse the flames with buckets of water.

Family members hugged one another at the base of the tree where their loved ones died.

A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police said: "We received a report at around 1am this morning (Sunday 21 June 2020) of a collision on Huddersfield Road, Barnsley.

"It is reported that a car had collided with a tree. Police and emergency services attended.

"Both the driver and the passenger were sadly pronounced deceased at the scene. Enquiries continue."

The A635 Huddersfield Road is still closed in both directions between Westbourne Grove and High Balk while police traffic accident investigators carry out their inquiries at the scene.
