NHS Lothian hospitals admit second highest number of COVID patients in Scotland

Hospitals in the Lothians continue to have the second highest number of coronavirus patients, second only to Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

According to the latest Scottish Government data, 78 patients are being treated for coronavirus, an increase of one on Thursday's count.

The total number of inpatients being treated for the virus has remained below 100 since early July, with NHS Lothian and Greater Glasgow and Clyde dealing with the majority of those who require hospital treatment.

Figures released today show 258 people are in Scottish hospitals, with the majority (152) in Glasgow.

In Grampian 15 people remain in hospital, with eight in NHS Lanarkshire.

Health boards with fewer than five patients do not disclose the actual number to protect patient confidentiality.

Whilst four are in intensive care, it is unknown where these patients are being treated for the same reason.

Nicola Sturgeon has repeatedly said keeping the number of patients who require hospitalisation low will be key to guarding against future lockdowns.

Whilst the overall numbers of new cases have spiked in recent days, the total number of people admitted to hospital across the country has remained steady.
