NHS Lanarkshire urges locals not to attend A&E unless it's absolutely necessary

NHS Lanarkshire are urging members of the public not to attend A&E unless it is absolutely necessary.

The healthboard posted on social media that all three emergency departments at Monklands, Hairmyres and Wishaw are at full capacity and have asked locals not to attend their local A&E unless it is life-threatening.

Judith Park, the healthboard’s director of acute services, said: “Unfortunately, we are experiencing sustained pressures across our three acute hospitals.

“We are working hard to ensure patients are being seen and treated or discharged as quickly as possible and our staff are prioritising those patients with the greatest clinical need.

“We are asking people to help us treat and admit or discharge patients attending our A&Es as quickly as possible by thinking about whether they need to attend A&E or can they access an alternative service including NHS 24 on 111 which is available day and night.”

In April, NHS Lanarkshire recorded its lowest ever A&E performance.

Figures showed that only 51.8 per cent of emergency patients were seen within the recommended four hour time frame.

In March, the healthboard exited Code Black status for the first time since July following its firebreak operation aiming to improve patient flow and reduce occupancy levels in its acute hospitals.
