NHS Lanarkshire urge East Kilbride residents to be flu smart this winter

NHS Lanarkshire is asking residents in East Kilbride to play their part and be flu smart this winter.

The health board are currently preparing to deliver flu vaccinations to everyone who is eligible – more than 300,000 people.

And, with the coronavirus still circulating in the community, doctors are warning it could be more important than ever to get the vaccine.

Medical director Dr Linda Findlay said: “The scale of the programme and the need to observe physical distancing means that clinics need to be held in large community venues.

“We expect there to be a high demand for this year’s vaccine and would like to thank everyone in advance for their patience with this new way of delivering this important vaccine.”

Because of the pandemic and the sheer volume of people needing to be vaccinated, appointments this year need to be allocated.

Drop-in clinics will not be held as the health board try to manage the number of people at each clinic to ensure physical distancing.

Pregnant women will receive their vaccine from their midwife and primary school children will receive it at school.

Dr Findlay added: “This year, more than ever, it is important that you receive your flu vaccine if you are eligible.

“Flu is serious and with COVID-19 still circulating in the community we all need to play our part to keep ourselves as healthy as possible over the winter months.

“Receiving the vaccine will help protect you, your loved ones and the NHS.”

Linda Fabiani welcomed the clarification surrounding vaccinations from NHS Lanarkshire.

The East Kilbride MSP said she had had a number of concerns raised by constituents about where to get their flu jab.

Linda said: “I am sure this clairification will put minds at ease.

“Obviously with COVID-19 guidelines and the large number of people to be vaccinated, social distancing needs to be in place with additional measures to ensure the safety of everyone concerned.

“We all need to play our part over the winter months to ensure we keep ourselves as healthy as possible, so I advise anyone who is eligible to pop along to their appointment.”

Those eligible for a vaccination are: two-to-five-year olds, everyone aged under 65 at risk, everyone aged 65 and over, and people who have been shielding and members of their households.
