NHS Lanarkshire apologise for delays to home vaccination programme

An East Kilbride councillor has called for NHS Lanarkshire's home vaccination programme to be ramped-up to protect the most vulnerable this winter.

Independent Councillor for East Kilbride West, David Watson, fears that vulnerable housebound residents are facing delays in receiving their flu and COVID booster jabs.

It comes as the health board apologised for a delay in getting the booster and flu vaccinations to some.

Councillor Watson said it would appear that NHS Lanarkshire are struggling with the number of home visits to administer the jabs.

He told Lanarkshire Live : "I have been contacted by elderly constituents who feel they have been abandoned and forgotten about as they have not heard from NHS Lanarkshire as to when they will receive these jabs.

"As we head into winter it is important that the most vulnerable people in our community receive the extra protection these jabs can give."

Councillor Watson has called on NHS Lanarkshire to increase their capacity in the housebound team as a matter of urgency to help vaccinate this vulnerable group.

Tom Elrick, general manager for the vaccination programme in Lanarkshire, said: "We would like to apologise to anyone who has experienced a delay in receiving a home visit for their COVID booster and flu vaccination.

"Currently, there are around 5500 local people who need a home visit and our dedicated housebound team is working extremely hard to vaccinate people as quickly as possible.

“With the support of the military we now have plans in place to release staff from our vaccination centres to assist the housebound team.

"These plans will allow us to significantly increase the number of people we can vaccinate and we will do our best to visit everyone by the end of November.”
