NHS heroes killed by coronavirus remembered as Britain falls silent

A single wreath at Newcastle's war memorial honours the NHS staff tragically claimed by Covid-19.

On Tuesday morning, Britain fell silent at 11am to remember the nation's key workers whose lost have been lost during the coronavirus pandemic.

Among the 20,000-plus casualties to date are teachers, care workers, doctors and nurses.

They include Sunderland community nurse Fiona Anderson, who died on Sunday, as well as Rebecca Mack.

The Morpeth nurse died earlier this month aged just 29.

And as the country remembered them, Unison members Joe Mcatominey, Linda Hobson and Michael Barclay - from Newcastle Hospital's Trust - placed a wreath at the Eldon Square memorial.

In London, PM Boris Johnson, who returned to work on Monday after beating the virus, joined in the silence amid calls for the Government to apologise for issues with personal protective equipment (PPE).

In response, minister Victoria Atkins said a billion pieces of PPE had been handed out since the pandemic started and that the Government was "doing our absolute best" to cope with demand.

Nationally over 100 NHS staff are thought to have died from coronavirus.

Ahead of the silence, Government professor Stephen Powis said: “This is an opportunity for us all to pay tribute to doctors, nurses, cleaners and many other NHS staff who have died in this pandemic.
