NHS Heroes: Buildings turn blue in support of the NHS

Building across Bristol are turning blue to show their appreciation and support for the NHS.

Last Thursday, March 26, people across the country clapped from their front doors, gardens and balconies at 8pm to show their support for NHS staff - who are working tirelessly during the coronavirus outbreak - with a simple but powerful gesture.

The gesture will be repeated every Thursday during lockdown and buildings across the city are now joining in.

In Bristol, Ashton Gate stadium and The Venue at the Malls Cribbs Causeway were among the venues last Thursday who turned blue to show their support and more building owners are now being urged to join in.

Organiser Chuck Crampton, who works in the events industry, said they were able to find around 115 buildings across the country to turn blue last Thursday.

He said: "On the Wednesday, we had 40 buildings confirmed and, when the applause happened, we had around 115 buildings.

"We were frantically calling people.

"As the applause is going to happen again this week, we are trying to get more people involved.

"This week, we also want to encourage individuals to join - using a torch or a mobile phone.

"If everyone in a tower block uses a torch from their window, it would look great."

Thousands of people joined #clapforourcarers last week, sparking a big reaction on social media.

The #clapforourcarers went viral and people were encouraged to film the event or live stream it to social media with the hashtag.

The aim of #makeitblue is to say thank you to frontline staff by flooding social media with the blue colour.

This could be a photo, video or message spreading positivity and the only rule is to make it blue.
