26-year-old is youngest of 665 new coronavirus deaths in England

A 26-year-old is the youngest of 665 new coronavirus deaths in England's hospitals.

NHS England has announced that the total number of people who have sadly died with Covid-19 now stands at 16,272.

Patients were aged between 26 and 102 years old. 26 of the 665 patients (aged between 48 and 95 years old) had no known underlying health condition.

Yesterday's update was a increase of 778 deaths.

A statement from NHS England said: "A further 665 people, who tested positive for the Coronavirus (Covid-19) have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 16,272.

"Their families have been informed."

At this stage, the overall UK figures have not been reported fully by government - although First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said that a further 77 people have died in Scotland, taking its total over the 1,000 mark.

The Welsh government has today reported 15 further deaths in the country.

The numbers that get released by the NHS and the Department of Health each day of course do not tell the full story of what is taking placed around the country.

These figures only refer to those who have died after testing positive for Covid-19 in hospital.

Earlier today, the Financial Times released new analysis of Office for National Statistics data, which predicts that the real coronavirus death total in the country could be as high as 41,000.

The FT extrapolation, based on figures from the ONS that were also published on Tuesday, includes deaths that occurred outside hospitals updated to reflect recent mortality trends.

The newspaper says that its analysis also backs up the idea that the peak of UK deaths occurred on April 8, with the fatality rate slowing gradually after that date.

Speaking in Parliament today, the Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the UK government believes the country is currently at the peak of coronavirus infections.

He said: "I just want to thank everyone from across the country for their steadfast commitment in following the rules, including in this House.

"It is making a difference. We are at the peak. But before we relax any social distancing rules or make changes to them we have set out the five tests that have to be met."
