NHS Dumfries and Galloway officials urge people to keep following rules after "fantastic" drop in cases

Health officials are urging people to keep following the rules after a “fantastic” drop in the number of coronavirus cases.

Figures from NHS Dumfries and Galloway show there less than five new positive cases in the week ending April 4, compared to 29 the week before.

There have been no new cases since one was reported on April 1, which took the total since the pandemic began to 4,137

The number of close contacts asked to self isolate has also fallen from 97 to under five.

Health board chief executive, Jeff Ace, said: “It’s fantastic to see case numbers come down to this level.

“It wasn’t that long ago that our Covid-19 numbers had skyrocketed on the back of the more highly transmissible B.1.1.7 variant and we were dealing with hundreds each week.

“Getting down to this kind of level is doubtlessly due to all the efforts and sacrifices made by people since Christmas.

“It’s also possible that we’re starting to see the effects of terrific public uptake of Covid-19 vaccinations.

“It’s important, though, that everyone continues to follow the rules. We appreciate that the rules are gradually changing.

“However, at least until a date currently set at April 26, the national instruction is to stay local, which means everyone within the region remaining within Dumfries and Galloway and not travelling elsewhere – unless for exceptional reasons.”

As at April 3, the seven day positivity rate stood at 1.3 per 100,000, compared to 20.2 per 100,000 the week before.

The region’s vaccination programme is also progressing well.

By the end of April 6, 86,689 people had received their first dose – nearly 70 per cent of the region’s adult population.

And 29,376 second doses have been administered, nearly a quarter of the population.

Mr Ace added: “It’s very important that everyone takes up the opportunity to get two doses of the vaccine – at the point in time when it is offered.

“Getting both doses helps provide everyone with the highest degree of protection against the coronavirus. It also helps to increase the defences within our communities, and paves the way for moves towards something more like normal life.”
