NHS doctor shares four sleeping positions to try when you have covid

People with chronic pain - or any pain - know all to well the feeling of 'painsomnia' which often occurs at night meaning the individual is unable to sleep due to pain.

And with people now developing long-covid, the challenge of trying to get to sleep even though they're exhausted is one that many are facing.

For some covid variants, such as omicron, it can result in people having body aches, muscles and joint pain as well as night sweats and lower back pain.

Other signs of the latest variant include congestion, brain fog, skin rashes and even sore eyes.

So in a bid to tackle the issue of being unable to sleep, one NHS doctor took to TikTok to share his tips and listed four sleeping positions to try to help you relax and hopefully get some much needed shut eye.

The NHS doctor, Naveed Iqbal says that lying each of these positions "improves oxygen in your lungs".

Explaining the reasoning for this, the NHS have said that the "virus itself can attack the lungs causing direct damage. However, the body’s immune response to the virus can also cause damage to the lungs.

"This can mean that patients are notable to get enough oxygen into their bodies. Oxygen is vital for all body functions and if you don’t have enough it can result in many things including confusion, chest pain, seizures and death."

Listing these positions, the NHS named each option and what to do.

Option one is called the "full prone". For this you will need to lay on your front with your head turned to one side and both arms tucked under chest/shoulders. Consider additional pillow under shins to offload hamstrings and pressure on the toes.

Option two and three also have the same name.

For option two you must lay on your front with your head turned to one side and both arms out and up next to your head. Place an additional pillow under your abdomen.

For option three, you'll need to "lay on your front with your head turned to one side and the leg on the same side out at 90 degrees. Support this leg with a pillow. Place your arms wherever is comfortable.

Option four has a different name and is called "side lie with partial prone."

For this you will need to lay on your side as much as possible with a pillow under your trunk and another under your knees for support.

After watching the doctor's video one said: "I was struggling to breath last night for some time and I tried this. I was so shocked that I woke up at 7:30 am. It worked like a sleeping pill."

Another added: "Thanks for this. I'm negative but have asthma n can't breathe. I'm sleeping on my stomach or my side with leg raised. Awesome info."
