NHS doctor offers his top tips for a 'perfect night sleep'

It's something many of us struggle with - being able to drift off at night after a busy day when your brain is in overdrive.

But an NHS doctor has given his advice for helping people to get the best night's sleep.

Dr Karan Rajan, an NHS surgeon, uses social media platform TikTok to explain medical situations to millions of viewers.

Describing the 3-2-1 method for the perfect night's sleep he said: "Three hours before bed, don't have any huge meals or alcohol.

"Alcohol can stop you having a rapid eye movement (REM) sleep which you need to have a deep restorative sleep."

He added: "Having a large meal before bed can increase the risk of acid reflux and indigestion and this can affect your sleep quality."

Two hours before bed, the doctor advises people to "get rid of the work".

"You need to be in a relaxed state of mind and winding down," he added.

The final tip he admits "everyone" will struggle with.

One hour before bed you should not be looking at any electronic screens.

He added: "That means that late night Netflix has got to go."

This is because screens emit blue light and numerous studies have established a link between using devices with screens before bed and increases in sleep latency, or the amount of time it takes someone to fall asleep.

Often advised before going to sleep is to read in bed. So it may be time to put TikTok down of an evening.
