NHS doctor quits in protest that Dominic Cummings wasn't sacked for lockdown breach

An NHS doctor working on the frontline who vowed to resign if Dominic Cummings wasn't sacked has quit his job.

Dr Dominic Pimenta, who works in Intensive Care, appeared on Good Morning Britain insisting that Cummings' actions were "unacceptable" and that a "line needs to be drawn".

Cummings was widely criticised for driving more than 250 miles from London to his parents house in Durham when his wife had coronavirus symptoms, despite the government's own rules telling Brits to stay at home during the pandemic.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson refused to sack his senior aide, saying that he had "followed the instincts of every father".

The London cardiology registrar today tweeted that he handed his notice in on Monday.

In a tweet at 6.56am today, the doctor said:  "Cool subtweet guys. I gave my notice Monday."

Speaking to hosts Charlotte Hawkins and Ben Shephard last week, Dr Pimenta explained his vow to resign if Cummings didn't.

He said: "I think we all have to draw a line in the sand, somewhere."

"If there was a genuine need for childcare, then I understand," he continued.

"I really have to stress the importance of what was done here... it is unacceptable and I will not accept it."

He had originally posted to social media a picture of himself wearing personal protective equipment, saying: "This stuff is hot and hard work.

"Haven't seen my parents since January. Frankly, Cummings spits in the face of all our efforts, the whole NHS. If he doesn't resign, I will."
