NHS charity hero Captain Tom Moore smashes £20m fundraising barrier

NHS fundraising hero Captain Tom Moore has smashed through the £20m mark after completing the last of 100 laps of his garden on Thursday.

The 99-year-old only aimed to raise £1,000 by walking around his property, but now his his incredible efforts have now led to calls for him to be knighted.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock has called the World War Two veteran an “an inspiration to us all” - and Tom revealed he has no plans to stop.

He told BBC Radio 2’s Zoe Ball Breakfast Show today: “It really is absolutely enormous isn’t it. That sum of money is very difficult to imagine but it’s coming in so well.”

His daughter Hannah Ingram-Moore said: “Tom is clear that as long as people believe that he’s worth investing in, he will keep walking because this is for such a phenomenal cause.

“We know that this story will have a life to it, so as long as people are donating we’ll keep supporting my father to do it and he will keep walking.”

There have been calls for the Captain , Keighley in West Yorkshire, to have the flypast after his incredible fundraising effort.

Since Captain Tom's mission went viral, almost 1,000,000 people have donated.

It all started as a simple plan between him and his daughter, promising to walk 100 lengths by his 100th birthday at the end of April, and aimed to raise £1,000.

You can donate to Captain Tom Moore's campaign on  his Just Giving page.

The money is going to NHS Charities Together - which represents, supports and champions the work of various NHS charities.

It will be spent on well-being packs and recuperation rooms for NHS staff, as well as electronic devices that will allow hospitalised patients to stay in touch with family.
