NHS Charities Together Cup FIFA 20 tournament will see sports stars face off to raise £10m

The NHS Charities Together Cup has been launched with an all-star line up in a bid to raise money to help the battle against coronavirus.

Chelsea legend John Terry, Olympic champion Justin Rose and England Cricket World Cup hero Ben Stokes are the leading names trying to help land £10m for the NHS - in a FIFA 20 tournament.

Terry, Aston Villa assistant manager and former Chelsea captain, has signed up for the competition for the NHS Charities Together Cup, which gets underway next week.

Eight teams will battle it out with the likes of Terry, Rose and Stokes joined by Boxer Dillian Whyte, Judy Murray, Leah Williamson and the Brownlee brothers - Jonny and Alistair.

Several TV personalities will also be involved from Paddy McGuinness to Chris Kamara with the public voting who represents each team.

The initial goal: raising money to help the NHS during the coronavirus pandemic.

£10m is the first target, but long-term there is hope to raise £100m.

The coronavirus has decimated the world as we know it, with the UK on a government-imposed lockdown and the NHS battling to keep people alive.

On Tuesday it was announced another 873 people had died in the UK, taking the overall total to over 17,000.

“The concept is simple,” said a tournament spokesperson.

“It is a knockout FIFA 20 competition featuring eight teams, each comprising three celebs, with a public vote deciding which member represents them in a one-on-one match.

“All proceeds are in aid of the Urgent Appeal: COVID-19 Relief Fund: and will go to NHS charities around the country supporting our heroic but desperately stretched NHS staff.

“The initial aim is to raise £10million with a long-term goal of £100m.”
