NHS ban on sale of high-energy drinks to those under-16 to be brought in

A ban on the sale of high-energy drinks to those under the age of 16 will be brought in later this year.

New rules will apply to retail units at all NHS sites in Scotland, and will also be adopted by NHS-run catering sites, from 30 November.

Drinks with an added caffeine content of more than 150mg/litre will be those affected.

This comes as part of the plan to increase the amount of healthy food and drinks available in shops within NHS buildings.

The measure is being introduced as an update to the Healthcare Retail Standard (HRS) which all retailers operating at NHS sites must adhere to.

Public health minister Joe Fitzpatrick said: "The HRS ensures that at least 50 per cent of food and 70 per cent of drinks on sale are healthier options. This supports the Scottish Government's strategy of working to improve Scotland's diet and tackle health inequalities."

Professor Steve Turner from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) welcomed the move but said that further action is required.
