Ayrshire's outgoing NHS boss is to land one of the country's top health roles, Ayrshire Live can reveal.
John Burns will stand down from his position as chief executive in Ayrshire and Arran later this month.
He will bring his nine year tenure to a close in order to become chief operating officer of Health and Social Care NHS Scotland.
Mr Burns begins the new job on July 1.
Nurse director and deputy chief executive, professor Hazel Borland, will act as Interim chief executive during the recruitment period.
Board chair, Lesley Bowie, said: "After nine years in the role of chief executive John is moving on to take up a fresh opportunity.
“NHS Scotland’s gain will be a huge loss for NHS Ayrshire & Arran, however I wish to thank John for his leadership and dedication to our health board over the years and offer him congratulations in his new appointment and every success in his new endeavour.”
