NHS and care workers are able to park at Piccadilly station for free

NHS and care workers can use the car park at Manchester Piccadilly for free during the coronavirus crisis.

Network Rail has waived charges for health workers at both Piccadilly and Liverpool Lime Street to show their 'support and gratitude' in these challenging times.

The move comes as passengers are asked to travel only if their journey is necessary.

This is the case for thousands of key workers who use the railways to travel to and from work.

The offer comes amid sweeping changes to train travel, including the shut-down of waiting rooms, the suspension of fare-dodger fines and a pause to ticket-checking, as well as a new reduced timetable.

Karen Hornby, head of performance and customer relationship at Network Rail, said: "The NHS are going above and beyond to save lives during this crisis so it’s important that we support them as much as we can.

"If you need to park at the station, just have your NHS or care work ID to hand and you’re welcome to park for free."

The announcement follows the Government’s recent decision that local councils will suspend car parking fees for NHS and care workers across the country.

Operators are now running reduced timetables, with passengers asked to limit travel to where it is strictly necessary.

A Network Rail spokesman said: "This will ensure that critical supplies and key workers, like carers and NHS staff, are able to keep moving over the coming months to help tackle the spread of Covid-19."
