NHL’s newest franchise will be called the Seattle Kraken and fans are stoked

It’s been a long wait but after much anticipation and fan speculation, the NHL’s newest franchise will be called the Seattle Kraken.

In a video livestream announcement Thursday morning, NHL Seattle executives announced the name along with their new logo and team design, all of which look absolutley incredible. For those unaware, the Karken is a mythological sea creature that comes from Scandinavian folklore, but is probably more widely known for its’ pop culture appearance in the absolutely abysmal Clash of the Titans movie.  It’s a giant, cephalopod of sea monster,  exactly the kind of name that a fan base can get behind.

Fans have speculated about the team name since the NHL Board of Governors officially voted in late 2018 to expand to Seattle. Early fan favorites included the Sockeyes, Totems and Metropolitans but Kraken picked up steam on social media and people never really looked back.

The team website also includes the team logo, an S in the shape of sea serpent and an anchor.

Per their site, the S hides a “single tentacle” that “stealthily rises from below, symbolizing the deep, dark waters of Puget Sound.”  If you look closely, the anchor, the teams secondary logo, rises up into the shape of the Seattle Space Needle.

The team also revealed their home jersey.

Everything about this is extremely dope and it can’t be said enough how great it is that the NHL actually has a franchise that is willing to do good and fun things. Though the name and logo reveal were the highlight of the announcement, the Seattle team also made sure to embrace diversity and inclusion as well as their mission for social good. The team already seems to be ahead of other clubs in this regard, and it’s more than enough for fans to get excited.
