NHL fans were furious that refs let Boston’s Charlie McAvoy off easy after ugly hit to head

Everybody watching Monday night’s Game 6 thought Boston Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy would get a five-minute major penalty and maybe even be ejected from the game after he lowered his shoulder into Josh Anderson’s head in a hit that looked pretty dangerous.

Instead, refs got together and ruled that he would only serve a 2-minute penalty for an illegal check to the head.

Boos rang down from the home crowd in Columbus and some fans threw stuff onto the ice in anger.

It was the type of hit that could lead the NHL to suspend McAvoy, as NBC’s analysts speculated on during the break between periods.
