NHL awards: Top Hart Trophy candidates

April 10--1. Patrick Kane -- Right wing -- Blackhawks

A late-season hot streak likely sealed the award for Kane, who became the first American-born player in 20 years to top 100 points in a season. Kane had 44 goals -- nine game-winners -- and 59 assists entering Saturday and helped carry the Hawks early in the season when they were having trouble scoring consistently. The Hart Trophy goes to the player deemed most valuable to his team. There's no telling where the Hawks would be without Kane.

2. Jamie Benn -- Left wing -- Stars

Benn has been the go-to guy during the Stars' resurgence, and even with linemate Tyler Seguin out the last few weeks, Benn has produced. He spent most of the season trailing Kane in the points race and had 41 goals and 47 assists entering Saturday. The difference for Benn this season is that his team is headed to the playoffs, which should garner him more votes than last, when he led the league with 87 points but the Stars missed the playoffs.

3. Sidney Crosby -- Center -- Penguins

If not for a slow start, Crosby could be giving Kane a run for his money for the points lead. Through his first 32 games, Crosby had just six goals and 16 assists. Over his next 48, Crosby totaled 30 goals and 33 assists. He also has nine game-winning goals and led a second-half resurgence for the Penguins, who fired coach Mike Johnston in December. Now, thanks to Crosby, they are Stanley Cup contenders again.
