(Reuters) - A system associated with remnants of former tropical storm Harvey is close to redeveloping into a tropical depression over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico and has a near 100 percent chance of strengthening into a cyclone over the next two days, the National Hurricane Center said on Wednesday.
The low, about 150 miles west of Merida, Mexico is expected to move to the northwest at about 10 miles per hour across the western Gulf of Mexico, reaching the northwestern Gulf coast late Friday, the NHC added.
"This system is likely to slow down once it reaches the coast, increasing the threat of a prolonged period of heavy rainfall and flooding across portions of Texas and Louisiana into early next week," the Miami-based weather forecaster said.
