Tropical storm Beta has formed in the Gulf of Mexico and is expected to be near hurricane strength by Sunday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said on Friday.
Beta, packing maximum sustained winds of 40 miles per hour (65 kph), was located about 335 miles (545 km) east-northeast of Tampico, Mexico, the NHC said.
